Chapter Nine – 1978
The moment her locker door slammed closed, there he was smiling at her. He was always smiling at her. Before school. After school. Or like now, during school. “Hey Benny,” Tess said as she turned to walk away. He followed her down the crowded hallway dodging various kids as she walked to her next class. Of course he followed her. He always followed her. Smiling and following. Smiling and following. It never ended. “What do you want, Benny?”
“There’s a dance coming up,” he said while reaching for the math book she carried in her hand. He had been told that girls liked it when you carried their books but Tess didn’t let go. After a few tugs he gave up and let her carry her own book.
“Yeah, I know.” She said, pointing to a bright if not crudely painted banner that the 9th Grade Pep Club had hung on the wall. “I can read.”
Thankfully her math class was just a few more steps ahead. If she could get there before Benny spoke again she could avoid being asked what she knew he wanted to ask. Tess walked faster. It was so awkward! Every school dance for the past two and a half years he’d asked her to go and every school dance for the past two and a half years she turned him down.
Just as Tess reached for the handle of the classroom door she heard a soft sing-songy voice behind her. “Hi Benny,” said Pam Tussle.
“Hey,” Benny replied, barely acknowledging Pam as he followed after Tess.
Tess allowed herself to smile at the slight. Pam Tussle was everything Tess loathed. She was constantly brushing her dark brown hair into big poufy feathers and putting on lip gloss. In between each class she had to rush to the girl’s restroom and check the mirror to make sure she was still beautiful. God forbid a piece of perfectly sprayed hair had fallen out of place or her lips didn’t look like she’s just inhaled a bucket of Colonel Sanders’ Fried Chicken. Pam was the girl who laughed at other girls’ clothes, who mocked anyone who wasn’t in her eyes perfect and who constantly talked about how fat she was even though she wasn’t fat at all just so her group of minions would say, “Oh Pam, you’re not fat. You’re so skinny and pretty.”
Covering the inside of Pam’s locker was a collage of the show Charlie’s Angels. Every inch was covered with shiny hair and flashing smiles. Pam was obsessed with Charlie’s Angels but Tess noticed that in every picture Sabrina was cut out. There was Jill, Kelly and Jill’s little sister Kris but no Sabrina. Tess didn’t watch the show that often but when she did Sabrina was the only character she related to. It was easy for Tess to understand that if it were Pam’s world all the Sabrina’s would be cut out
On the first day of 7th grade Pam Tussle decided that she didn’t like Tess.
